New Machiya Openings in Opening in Takayama in January 2025: “Hanasatomachi Aonoha and Yukinoha”
2 exclusive, private machiya holiday house rentals have joined the MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN Takayama brand and will open simultaneously in January 2025: “Hanasatomachi Aonoha” and “Hanasatomachi Yukinoha.” Located in Takayama City, just steps from JR Takayama Station and within walking distance of popular tourist spots such as “Takayama Old Town” and “Nakabashi Bridge,” these machiya holiday houses (vacation rentals) offer a unique, private experience for one group per day.

The exteriors and light-filled courtyards of the two neighboring machiya homes are adorned with intricate plaster art by Syuhei Hasado, a renowned local craftsman from Takayama. Guests will enjoy a stay that feels like living in an art gallery, surrounded by the beauty of traditional craftsmanship within the comfort of a fully private machiya residence.
Inside, the spacious rooms are bathed in natural light from skylights, creating a luxurious, open atmosphere. The ceiling design reflects the thatched-roof ‘gassho-zukuri’ farmhouses found in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go.

Both machiya homes feature a living-dining area, kitchen, 2 bedrooms (a Japanese-style room and a Western-style room), and a spacious bathroom. Rooms facing the light courtyards are equipped with large glass windows that invite natural light, offering a serene connection to nature. Throughout the machiya, guests can admire the traditional plaster artwork, showcasing the skills of Takayama’s master craftsmen. “Hanasatomachi Aonoha” also includes a private hinoki wood sauna, allowing guests to indulge in a relaxing sauna experience at any time during their stay, further elevating the retreat’s luxurious offerings.
Prime Location Near Takayama’s Attractions and Convenient Access to Shirakawa-go
Stroll to the historical streets of “Takayama Old Town” with its elegant row of traditional wooden architecture, visit the historic “Takayama Jinya” (the only remaining government office from the Edo period), browse the local specialties at the “Miyagawa Morning Market,” or admire the picturesque “Nakabashi Bridge.” With convenient access to trains and express buses from Takayama Station, guests can also explore the wider Hida region, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed “Shirakawa-go” and the charming townscape of “Hida Furukawa” with its scenic water canals and historic storehouses.
