‘Kuraha Machiya House’ Opens in Kanazawa, Japan

Kuraha Machiya House, a renovated traditional Japanese machiya holiday house, has opened as part of MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN Kanazawa. Located approximately a 9-minute walk from Kanazawa Station, the 125-year-old property has been carefully restored as a private holiday house accommodating up to 13 guests.

A Historic ‘Kura’ Storehouse Reimagined

One of Kuraha Machiya House’s most distinctive features is its original kura, a traditional Japanese storehouse once used to protect valuable household goods and merchandise. Rather than removing the structure during renovation, the historic kura has been preserved and transformed into the house’s master bedroom.

The spacious room retains the character of the original structure through its stone walls, exposed wooden beams, high ceilings, and antique Japanese chests, while two queen beds provide modern comfort. This marks the first time MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN has transformed an entire historic kura as part of a holiday house.

The history of the property stretches back more than 125 years, when the machiya was used as a local shop selling traditional sugegasa sedge hats and secondhand clothing.

With approximately 197 square meters of space, Kuraha Machiya House accommodates up to 13 guests across 5 bedrooms and is reserved exclusively for one group per stay.

At the center of the house is a spacious living and dining area with a double-height ceiling and exposed wooden beams. A large dining table and sofa area provide plenty of room for families and groups of friends to gather together.

Traditional and modern elements continue throughout the property, including a tatami room overlooking a small tsuboniwa courtyard garden and a spacious bathroom featuring a hinoki wood bathtub. A fully equipped kitchen, two bathrooms, laundry facilities, and modern amenities make the house suitable for both short visits and extended stays.

Convenient Access to Kanazawa Station and the City’s Cultural Attractions

Kuraha Machiya House is located approximately a 9-minute walk from Kanazawa Station’s East Exit, near the Asano River. Omicho Market can also be reached on foot, while Kanazawa Castle Park, Kenroku-en Garden, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, and Higashi Chaya District are easily accessible by public transportation.

This machiya house also includes one complimentary on-site parking space, providing additional convenience for guests exploring Kanazawa and the surrounding Hokuriku region by car.

As part of MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN Kanazawa, Kuraha Machiya House offers travelers the opportunity to stay in a renovated traditional Japanese machiya while experiencing the history, architecture, and everyday atmosphere of Kanazawa.

Kuraha Machiya House  is now open and accepting reservations.
