In November 2024, MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN Kyoto “Yotsuki” opened as a fully private, one-group-per-day machiya holiday house in downtown Kyoto, Japan.

‘Yotsuki’ is a renovated traditional holiday house designed with quintessential machiya architecture details and modern comfort, and can accommodate up to 5 guests. The ground floor features a living and dining area, a fully equipped kitchen with cookware and dishware, floor heating on the first floor, and a washing machine, making it suitable for both short and extended stays.

The machiya house offers 2 bedrooms, including a ground-floor bedroom with views of a private tsuboniwa garden, and an upstairs tatami room that can be fitted with up to 3 futon beds, ideal for families or small groups.

The exterior of the machiya features traditional earthen walls and a decorative circular window known as a shitaji mado. This circular design evokes the image of the moon and is closely associated in Japanese culture with positive concepts such as “en” (縁), meaning connection, and “wa” (和), meaning harmony, reflecting the spirit behind the house’s design.

Conveniently located near Omiya Station, Yotsuki offers direct access to the historic streets of Gion, the bamboo groves of Arashiyama, and is within easy walking distance of Nijo Castle. While situated in a lively neighborhood, the house is tucked away at the end of a narrow alley, creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.
