Orie Machiya House, a private, renovated traditional townhouse, has opened in Kyoto, offering guests an exclusive machiya stay in one of the city’s most storied historic neighbourhoods.

Located within walking distance of Kyoto Station and Higashi Honganji Temple, home to one of the largest wooden structures in the world, Orie Machiya House sits in a neighbourhood once shaped by kimono merchants and skilled craftspeople. The surrounding streetscape remains preserved today as part of Kyoto’s Historic Scenic Preservation Districts. The latticed wooden façade and traditional townhouse architecture have been carefully restored, while the interior has been thoughtfully updated to provide a comfortable and welcoming setting for modern travellers.

This private machiya house accommodates up to 6 guests and features 3 bedrooms: a Western-style bedroom with a double bed and desk on the second floor, a light-filled Japanese tatami room upstairs that can be arranged with futon bedding for up to 2 guests, and a first-floor tatami room with a tokonoma alcove, also available as a bedroom with futon bedding. The living and dining area seats up to 6 guests and connects through sliding fusuma doors — decorated with traditional karakami paper in soft blue tones and delicate gold motifs — to a seating area overlooking a tsuboniwa Japanese garden.

The bathroom features a deep soaking tub inspired by the traditional goemon-buro, set beside the garden. Additional amenities include floor heating throughout, a fully equipped kitchen with induction stovetop, microwave oven, rice cooker, and a washing machine with dryer function.
